The German Energiewende pursues ambitious collective aims with a large time horizon. The retrofitting of the energy system until 205 must be flexible such that it is possible to adapt the planning to present conditions. For this purpose, it is necessary to include a systematic consideration of the characteristics of the energy system, e. g., structure of components, controllability, system reliability, economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, legislation as well as social and ethical aspects.

The interdisciplinary initiative “Energie System 2050” of the Helmholtz-Association investigates the integration of renewable energies which might propose strongly fluctuating power profiles. In order to retrofit the German and European energy system and to enable the German Energiewende, five topics of research are focused on:

  1. Storage and Grids
  2. Biogenic Energy Sources
  3. Paths of Energy and Materials incorporating Hydrogen
  4. Sustainable Life-Cycle Analysis of System Levels
  5. Toolbox with Databases

The research group Energy Systems Engineering of the Chair of Technical Thermodynamic pursues the aim of developing methods and tools for planning future energy systems. To satisfy future requirements the selection of installed components (structure) and their sizing is optimized. For this purpose, not only electricity conversion units are considered but also cooling, heating and combined heat and power technologies are taken into account.

When optimizing structure and sizing of an energy system, also the operation of the components has to be optimized since the three decision levels, i. e., structure, sizing, and operation, are interdependent. The developed quasi-static optimization model will be evaluated with dynamic programming methods.
