In Germany, about 40% of the primary energy consumption are caused by the industrial sector. A global view and crosslinking of the factory can improve the energy efficiencies by 20 to 30%, according to the study “energy efficiency in production” by the Fraunhofer society.

This potential for energy efficiency can be exploit by integrated methods and tools. Precisely, this should be done by simultaneous consideration of the factory and energy supply system in all stages: conceptual design, execution planning and operation of the fabric.

In this research project the Chair of Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) focuses on the integration of production processes in the structure optimization of energy supply systems. Generally, the production processes are modeled as fixed constraints, in this project the LTT will integrate production processes as another degree of freedom in the optimization. Thus finally, the production layout and the energy supply system are designed by an integrated optimization.


The project ‘imPROvE’ is intensely accompanied by different industrial partners to insure the industrial application and practicability of the developed solutions. This offers final tests of the developed methods and procedures on real production factories.
