Within the four projects “Kopernikus-Projekte für die Energiewende“, technological and economical solutions are developed for a new energy system in a dialogue between science, industry and civil society. The four projects focus on new grid structures, more flexible use of renewable energies, orientation to industrial processes and fluctuating energy supply, and system integration and interlinking the energy supply. Through an increased expansion of renewable energies, high amounts of fluctuating electricity are generated in future. The focus of the project “Power-to-X” is to store this renewable energies into fuels and chemicals.
The goal of the project is to develop an overall concept for an optimal integration of renewable energies into other sectors such as heat, mobility and industry. For this purpose, the renewable electricity is converted via electrolysis into hydrogen, carbon monoxide or syngas. Carbon dioxide is here used as renewable carbon source and can be obtained from industrial point sources or captured directly from air. Within the project “Power-to-X”, one emphasis is on oxymethylene ethers (OMEx) as alternative fuels and building blocks for plastics. The LTT focus on the environmental assessment and optimization of the developed P2X-processes. For the environmental assessment, the standardized method Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used. LCA takes into account the entire life cycle of a product, from the production of raw materials to the recycling or final disposal of wastes. Thus, LCA can identify the environmental most beneficial P2X-process and shows ecological trade-offs between the single processes.Copyright: BMBF
